Social Justice can be equality. No man is better than the other. Everyone should be given the same rights. Especially as an individual, no one should be criticized. When i hear the word “social justice” i think about my community. It may not be beverly hills, but its somewhere i can call home. Although its predominantly african-american, i mingle with all sorts of races. I look at myself as a social butterfly.
Obstacles that i face while achieving social justice is stereo-types. I know that as a young African-American, i face a lot of negative profiling thats put upon me. Although “equality” is social justice, justice isn't always served! There is still a lot of racism i face. There is also segregation around, although it may not be concrete, its still an abstract thought.
People struggle for justice by advocating! Just like the video we watched in class on the young lady, she spoke up for what she believed was right. I often see people in my community working together to achieve success. One good thing is we all support one another. Every year we have a block club party and everyone comes outside with tons of food, music and games for the kids! This shows unity because my community isn't always fighting and doing negative things. It makes me believe and have hope for my people.
My role in the struggle isn't necessarily a role. I am surrounded by this issue, but I don't partake in it. I go to school, work and even play softball. I choose not to come outside because i dont want to be sucked into the negativity around. I try to stay positive. im not saying my community is horrible because, they make sure to look out for one another, but there is a lot of violence.
My issue has a lot to do with social justice. the perception of beauty affects a lot of young ladies. In my community the young ladies don't dress the classiest. They reveal a lot of skin, which i feel isn't necessary. They feel as though less clothes is more attention. In my eyes its the complete wrong attention. Women aren't being treated how they should be treated because the way the look at themselves. They are settling for less, when they have the potential to be more.
